Mosquito Mayhem

Updated: Jan 17, 2024

What did Santa bring this year..?

tiny demons

Yep, that's right!! ..... mosquitos

I have literally not been bothered by a single mosquito in the 4 weeks I have been here, until Christmas day, around 25Dec is when the nearby peaceful park became a swarm of demonic infestation, where my dog can't even poop without my legs being coated with the buggers. Here's the story.

I woke up on Christmas day and took my pup to the park like we do everyday, only to be suddenly SWARMED by tiny blood-suckers! I HATE MOSQUITOS. Just four days earlier... nothing, nada, no mosquitoes in sight. We were at the park doing pullups, walking aroun and meeting other dogs, enjoying the tree shade, etc. So, thinking this Parque Las Heras area was an anomaly...I tested out other parks, thinking, 'maybe they just watered, a pipe broke, or something is causing standing water, creating the perfect breeding zone.' However, to my dismay, any spot with grass, or any sort of vegetation (shade worse than in sunlight) seemed to harbor mosquitoes, ready to drain me and my dog of our life-force. We even sat outside to try a new sushi spot and were continuously surrounded... talk about a BUZZKILL! Our waitress said all of January and February is mosquito season.... yuck! I started noticing people just dousing themselves in Off! bug-spray, the restaurants were even loaning some out to their patrons. Did I mention I hate mosquitos?

Apparently, mosquitos are attracted to the type of soaps you use.. check this video out

So, in summary, mosquitoes are running rampant in Buenos Aires around Christmas, through the end of the year, and are expected to do so until approximately 01Mar. We shall see. Stay inside, lock your doors, and avoid using floral soap! Coconut products might help repel. I'll update on the timeline and what I found to work. It seems many of the wealthy go down to Mar Del Plata for Jan/Feb, so maybe this is why. I can't get out of CABA with my dog since he's over 20#, so I can't verify the mosquitos anywhere else, at the moment. But,

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

***Update: As of 17Jan2024 the mosquitos were non-existent at the park today and I was there for an hour. Over the last couple of weeks I have made trips to the nearby park at various times of day, along with varying weather (hot, humid, raining, rained yesterday, morning, evening, etc). There has been no pattern, on days I think they're going to swarm there are non and on other days I haven't seen any. Over the last couple of weeks though the mosquito population has decreased SIGNIFICANTLY!
